FREE WEBSPACE
There are literally hundreds of places on the web where you can now get free web space! Many of them have so many restrictions, or allow you so small a space that they are virtually worthless. Since your goal is to be an internet entrepreneur, we have kept that in mind and are including only the best possible sites for you here. Just click on the links below to go to the sites that offer you the free web space. While you are there, be sure to check out their POLICIES, or "Terms of Use". Each one has different rules, and we cannot possibly list them all.
FREESERVERS.COM Offers 12 MB of free webspace and also allows you to have a subdomain FREE (ie. yourname.freeservers.com) or can arrange for an actual domain name, although you will have to pay the Internic fees. An EXCELLENT host, Optimation has a website in development here (www.discounts.freeservers.com) which may or may not be up and running by the time you read this. In any event, check them out!
ANGELFIRE.COM Offers 5 MB of free web space and a free e-mail account. Business sites are OK and encouraged. When you first create your site, they will have "pop-up" advertising enabled, which can be annoying, however it is easy to disable it.
GEOCITIES.COM Offers 11 MB of free web space and includes technical support. This site is very popular and has tons of users, however their system is fast. You can be sure they are here to stay.
XOOM.COM Offers 11 MB of free web space and free e-mail.
TRIPOD.COM Offers 11 MB of free web space. This is another company that has been offering free web space for quite a while. Again, they should be around for a long time to come.
HOMESTEAD.COM Offers 5 MB of free web space. This site is geared more towards home users, but accepts commercial sites as well. It's interface will only allow you to use Windows 95 (and presumably Windows 98) but the nice part is that their interface offers inexperienced users the ability to create pages easily - no knowledge of HTML is required.
FREEYELLOW.COM Offers 12 MB of free web space. Also has a nice selection of help to promote your website. Commercial activities are not only OK, they are positively ENCOURAGED! For a business site, this is definitely one of your best bets.
RAMPAGE Offers 100 MB of free web space, however they do not allow any commercial activity whatsoever. We have included this site here in case you want a large personal website, or in the event that you would like to be "creative" and use your space there for "off-site storage" although we do not endorse or condone such activity.
FORTUNECITY.COM Offers 10 MB of web space + free e-mail.
CROSSWINDS.NET Offers UNLIMITED space for personal use, however commercial sites are limited to 25 MB. This is still, though, more webspace than you can get on most other sites.
INTERNET-CLUB.COM Offers 15 MB of free web space and email. They also offer your own chat room, so if you can somehow use this to your advantage, it could be a great site for you.
PROHOSTING.COM Offers 10 MB of free web space, along with your own POP3 email account and custom CGI and SSI scripts.
WEB4FREE.COM Offers 10 MB of web space and allows commercial content BUT the restrictions here are very broad. Instead of "No adult sites" they say "No offensive sites". What constitutes an offensive site? Who knows. If you use this provider, we suggest keeping the site entirely "G" rated and staying away from anything that could be considered even remotely controversial.
FREENATION.COM Only offers 7 MB of web space, but comes with free e-mail as well as full CGI-BIN access. This can be VERY valuable to a commercial website, so I suggest you check them out.
HYPERMART.NET One of the best free sites for your business. In fact, there are NO PERSONAL PAGES allowed here - businesses only! They offer 10 MB of web space and CGI-BIN access AND allow you to have your OWN DOMAIN NAME!!! If you choose this option, your site is still free, however you will be billed by the INTERNIC (completely unrelated to Hypermart) at $35 per year for the domain name with the first 2 years paid in advance. A good option to choose for those who are more serious about building a business on the web.
EARTHONLINE.NET Another site that has been around for quite a while. We are not going to list their features here since they are constantly upgrading them, hoewever commercial content is allowed.
POLBOX.COM Only offers 2 MB of space for your web site and 1 MB of space for your incoming email, but this might be useful if you want to set up multiple sites.
NETTAXI.COM Offers 3 MB of web space and e-mail. Commercial content is OK.
WEBVILLAGE.COM Offers 2 MB of webspace and does not allow commercial content. Still, they do have a lot of useful stuff there. I'd suggest checking them out when you have the extra time.
ONESTOP.NET Only offers 2 MB of web space but has very few restrictions. Almost anything goes here except for activites which are blatantly illegal, such as child pornography or "warez sitez".
VIADUK.NET Offers 5 MB of webspace, based in RUSSIA. Some of the site is in english, some in russian, which can make things difficult. We have listed them here for those of you who might be in one of those "gray areas" with your business. While we do not endorse or promote any illegal activity, it is hard to imagine being prosecuted by a company based in another country. As always, we just provide the information. What you do with it is up to you.
SPREE.COM Offers unlimited space for your website. They do require you to place links for their products and services on each of your pages, but the nice thing is, you get a REFERRAL FEE from them if any of your visitors decide to buy something.
NOTES:
This is a small list of sites out of the hundreds that you can find on the web.
I have attempted to include only the best sites available - there are several others that offer you 1/2 MB of space, or will only host your site if it is related to their interests. For all practical purposes these sites are virtually worthless to the vast majority of people who will try to start their own businesses on the internet. I also excluded sites that are not currently accepting new members, or have a history of being unreliable (too much downtime, etc.). If you are interested in these types of sites, or if you would like to be a pioneer and discover new sites, you can try the following search engines:
Yahoo!, LYCOS, Alta-Vista, WebCrawler or any of the thousands of other search engines out there!
